KIS High School

The High School at KIS is Grades 9-12. All classes are based on the Main Campus (Highclerc).

KIS High School has 22 academic department offices, over 60 spacious classrooms, a large computerized library with more than 28,000 volumes, a mini-theater, media room, a student recreation room and study hall as well as meeting and performing spaces.

The teaching team consists of well trained teachers supplemented with special needs staff. In addition, professional volunteers, teacher trainees and international exchange students are frequent visitors adding to the richness of KIS High School life.

As an American high school, all students graduate from KIS with an internationally recognized High School Diploma. The KIS IB Diploma program is optional for grades 11 and 12 and runs alongside the High School Diploma program. Both IB and SAT results have been outstanding compared with the world and US means.

Students in grades 9-10 follow the Middle Years Program (which begins in Grade 6), with grades 11-12 students working within the IB framework or towards the KIS diploma. Social activities, Social experience, Hiking, Camping and Sports often combine the entire grade levels.

Students who opt for the KIS diploma will find that in most cases they are in classes which are IB classes and are assessed by the IB criteria and requirements. The difference is they do not sit the external exam, and internal assessments are not submitted to the IB for monitoring, but graded by the teacher. This allows for the option of taking some courses for IB certificate if desired. (A higher level course done for IB certificate does hold weight for many colleges, especially if related to the area of future studies).

All students are assigned a homeroom teachers. Homeroom teachers monitor students' academic program and progress, assisting them in developing successful study patterns and effective relationships with teachers and other students.

Accredited in 1960 by the Middle States Association of Schools & Colleges, Philadelphia, KIS High School was the first international and first IB school in India with IBO approval of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program for grades 11 and 12 in 1974.

KIS High School is an evocative place. Student groups roam casually between classroom and specialist classroom blocks built of traditional gray stone topped with terracotta tiled roofs, set amongst verdant gardens and contrasting with abundant green lawn, communal spaces. The 'quad' with its covered verandahs and heritage tree has a distinct 'college' feel.

KIS High School students live in student residences in and around Kodaikanal (Kennedy, Upper Boyer, Lower Boyer, Solvik, Wissy, Phelps, Sherwood - for girls and Bruton, Bartlett West, Bartlett East, East House, Claverack, Central House, Penryn, Lochend for boys). Girls' student residences are located on the main campus and boys' student residences are within 10 minutes walking distance from the high school campus.
